The take-off was good and now Milon and the King sat back in comfort and watched the approaching asteroids on the viewscreen. The mini-ship’s automatic cannons destroyed any that came too close, leaving a wake of dust and debris behind the fleeing lovers. A wake that could be traced… * * * Jennifer the Complete looked around. FlightofFancy was still standing nearby. “Yes?” she said. “You were crying.” She gave him a strange look. “What is going on here?” “The King has left with Milon the Assassin, an agent of the Quad-Galactic Alliance. Queen Knives is on the moon, demanding the King’s attendance. I, FlightOfFancy, have fallen in love with the Queen, or at least so it seems. You, I believe, have suddenly realised that you are in love with the assassin, but duty must come first.” “That’s very good,” she said. “I try my best.” “Shall we begin?” “We’d better,” answered FlightOfFancy, “or we’ll be left behind. I suggest making our way to your spacecraft before pursuing your erstwhile partner and my erstwhile prince. I do presume you keep a spare.” “We have a whole academy full of them, but none could ever complement me so well as Milon.” She almost began to sob again. “A spare spacecraft?” “Ah, I see,” she said. “Of course we do, in case a discreet departure is necessitated. In fact, it was the mini-ship which was taken by Milon. We can use the interstellar craft, which is far more powerful.” “Even so, it may take some time to catch them.” “You think so?” she said, archly. |
