Milon the Assassin has led a strange and terrible life. Some or all of his appearances in Silver Age books may be regarded as apocryphal. Though he has been described as the creation of Steven Gilligan, one is forced to wonder. Unconfirmed reports place him in Rome during the first century BC, apparently as the killer of the unfortunate Clodius. However, those same reports claim that he died, partly at the hands of Quintonius Pomponius Rufus, son of Cornelia, so perhaps we should take them with a pinch of salt.

In Professor Challenger in Space, Milon made an uncanny appearance toward the end of the book, playing a key role in the denouement of the story. It was here established, or so we are given to think, that his most distinguishing features are the lacquered eyebrows that extend an inch beyond each side of his head.

He played a much greater role in Quiet, the Tin Can Brains are Hunting! – somewhat inspired by the fighting over the body of Jerry Cornelius in Michael Moorcock’s novel, The English Assassin, the driving force behind events in the novel is the search for Milon. The first act tells of those who search for him, the second act tells of those who try to rescue him, and only in the third act does Milon himself take the stage, as he battles for his own freedom.

During this story we see for the first time Milon’s patented martial arts moves, and discover just why he deserves his fearsome reputation.
